Once I started listening to my mentors, I went from being the kid who was never even picked to play sports in P.E. in school to competing in the Olympics - three times!

I'm the most unlikely Olympian out there. I'm not a great athlete. I'm not fast, strong, or agile. And I didn't take up the sport of luge until I was 21 years old. But by consistently and persistently following the success principles my mentors and coaches taught me, four years and a few broken bones later, I was competing in the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

By following the same principles, I was still competing in the brutal sport of luge at the age of 39 - competing against 20-year-olds. Yeah, I guess I'm the Nolan Ryan of luge!

But I was broke. A broke salesman - can you imagine that? I was a three-time Olympian and people STILL wouldn't buy from me!

How pitiful is that? I went through 20 jobs in 20 years. My wife almost left me - heck, back then, I would have left me!

My Rude Awakening...

Then, in 2002, at the age of 39, the light bulb went on. It was so obvious.... I had been applying the success principles in my sports life but I wasn't applying them to my financial life. My sports life was great, but my financial life stunk. 

You see, there are certain thought patterns that occur in sports and in business. The thought patterns that make you successful in sports will make you successful in business... and in life.

I sat down and started analyzing what had worked and what hadn't worked over the years in my Olympic quest (I have degrees in chemistry and biology, so believe me, I can analyze data). 

I read and re-read all of my notes from all of the books, tapes, and seminars. I called my coaches and mentors, I spoke with behavioral psychologists, and for about a year, I distilled all of their knowledge and created a step-by-step system.

I had the blueprint, the steps, the thought patterns, the system that had taken me from an average athlete to an Olympic athlete. The question was, could I use the the thought patterns that helped me go 90 MPH on my sled to help my business go 90 MPH?

My scientific background told me that I simply needed to test my hypothesis. You see, no matter how good a theory looks or sounds, it must be tested in the real world.

So I became the guinea pig and I started applying those steps consistently and persistently in my business.
